From the School…

Star Gazing Night: Our Star Gazing Night has been rescheduled to tonight, March 30 beginning at 7:00 p.m. on the school’s patio. Due to the complications with rain on our last scheduled event, we are now permitted to open the invitation to all of our students and their families. So, regardless of whether you signed up earlier in the year, join us tonight to take in some beautiful stars and constellations!

Griffin Games: Thank you to all of the volunteers who worked so hard to make the Griffin Games amazing. And it truly was amazing! We cherished seeing students, parents, faculty, and guests enjoying all of the activities, booths, food, and interaction of the day. Thank you again!

Legacy Gift Program: At the Griffin Games, Mr. Jeff Van Brunt, the Chief Development Officer for Great Hearts Academies, spoke alongside Mr. Williams in greater detail about our Legacy Gift program. As you recall from previous communications, we have asked all of our families to consider contributing to our Legacy Gift Program, which is a set of sponsorship opportunities to help pay for the new classrooms, offices, and areas we added to our campus last year. At the Griffin Games, several families made a commitment to the program. We want to thank these initial families and challenge our remaining families to join them. We still have many sponsorship opportunites that we need to fulfill this school year. Please see the updated map for the remaining opportunities at http://www.glendaleprep.org/downloads/GP Legacy Gift Program.pdf and turn in a Sponsorship Commitment form to the main office today. The Commitment form is the second page of the document found at the previous link. Additional copies are also available in the main office. We appreciate your partnership.

Summer School: This summer, we intend to offer four courses for summer school here at Glendale Prep—Pre-Algebra Readiness, Algebra I Fundamentals, Algebra II Review, and Latin I. The courses will be held from June 7 – 30. Registration information will be sent home soon.

Algebra II Notes:
1. 8th Grade – 8th grade students currently in Algebra I will not be required to take Algebra II in the summer. These students continuing on with us will take Algebra II in 10th grade here at Glendale Prep.

2. 9th Grade – 9th grade students currently in Geometry will take Algebra II next year at Glendale Prep. 9th graders (new to GP this year) who have not yet taken Algebra I will be expected to do so this summer at Glendale Prep or through another approved summer program.

The 2010-2011 School Calendar: Next year’s school calendar is now available on our website under the “About Glendale Prep” tab. Click here to view it.

From the Parent Organization…

Parent Organization Meeting: Plan now to join a great group of parents this Thursday evening (April 1st) at 7pm in room #17 for a great meeting. We are done by 8:30 p.m. and this is a great way to get information on upcoming events and get to know other parents involved in the school. Parents only please – if you must bring your GP children, we will have a classroom for them to do schoolwork in. Please see the attached agenda.

Restaurant Nights:
March 31 – Babbo’s @ 67th and the 101 (NE Corner) from 11:00am to 9pm. Please present the attached flyer and the school will receive 20% of your purchase.

8th Grade Promotion & Awards Ceremony: It is coming SOON! This is a great evening for all of our students. Come be a part of the memories. Contact Joy Hodesh at jhodesh@hotmail.com to get involved.

Used Booksale & Used Uniform Sale: Mark your calendar now for the Used Booksale (this is not for textbooks) and Used Uniform Sale. The dates are Thursday, May 6th and Friday May 7th from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. A flyer will be distributed to students this week with more information. Start cleaning off your bookshelves now – donations can be made to the front office – please mark them “Used Booksale”.

Griffin Games: Thank you to all the wonderful parents who stepped in to make a fantastic event. The weather was great, the food was yummy, the commemorative t-shirts fabulous, the raffle and auction enticing, the dunk tank cold, the jail crowded and the snacks plentiful. All in all a success. Again, thank you to a great community of Glendale Griffins!

EMERGENCY FORM UPDATE: At the beginning of this school year, all GP parents filled out a form to grant permission as to what, if any, medication the front office could dispense to your child (i.e. Ibuprofen, cough drops, tums).  Parents also completed an Emergency Contact form that listed who to contact in case of an emergency, who was allowed to pick your child up, and any other pertinent information you felt like the school should have.

In order to save you the effort of completing these forms again, we would like to give you the option of keeping the forms you filled out this year on file for the 2010-2011 school year.   If you would like to fill out new forms, please fill out the ones attached to this email and turn them into the front office no later than March 13th, 2010. If you have questions as to what is on your form please contact the front office.   If you do not turn in new forms by this deadline, we will assume that you would like us to use the forms on file from this year for next year.  Thanks much!

Griffin Games: We hope you all have made plans to join us for our 2nd Annual Griffin Games on Saturday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.  In addition to the great games, food, and people, you’ll want to make sure to be here at 11:30 a.m. for a special announcement from Headmaster Williams and Dr. Scoggin, the CEO of Great Hearts Academies.

As you prepare for the event, you can assist the school by doing the following:

  1. Donate items to the Parent Organization to create raffle gift baskets for the Games – each class section, e.g. 6A, is being asked to donate according to a theme (see the separate Griffin Games email coming today for details)
  2. Volunteer to assist with a booth at the Games – contact Sandy Gallo (sandygallo@cox.net)
  3. Read the Legacy Gift Program email and attached information (coming this week!) and join in the campaign

Spring Dress Code Reminder: After Spring Break, students will once again be allowed to wear khaki walking shorts and short sleeve oxford shirts (oxford shirts apply to 9th graders only).  The Parent Organization will be selling select uniform items at their Booster Booth this Friday, March 12th after school, beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Lost and found: All lost and found items will be displayed next to the Booster booth this Friday, March 12th at 12:30 p.m.  Please remind your children to check for their items.  Items not picked up on Friday will be donated to Goodwill.

3rd Quarter Evaluations: Third quarter evaluations (report cards) are coming soon.  Teachers will be writing them over Spring Break, they will be reviewed beginning March 22, and parents should receive them in the mail by March 26th.

The 2010-2011 SCHOOL CALENDAR: Next year’s school calendar is now available on our website under the “About Glendale Prep” tab.

Hugs From Home
: Glendale Prep’s Community Service Project for this quarter is to support our troops abroad.  The students are collecting items to make care packs to send to our troops.  Through one of our very own families we have picked two local Arizona residents presently serving in Iraq and Kuwait as our contact and will be mailing the boxes to them to share with the soldiers in their unit.  As you are looking at the attached list of things the soldiers have requested, please also carefully look at the items that can not be mailed.  Note that the first items on the list of items requested are cards and letters.  The soldiers love to receive news about what is happening here at home, even the mundane day to day things.  Please bring your items to the front office – make sure they are marked “Hugs from Home”.

It is time to order lunches.  Attached is the order form due Monday, March 8th by 4pm.  Please note this order is for lunches delivered after the Spring Break.

You can place items in the basket on the PO Credenza in the front office.  Thank you and watch here for additional items.

Mary Crow is heading up our parent teams to man the event booths by grade and section.  She has broken this down into 30 minute shifts between the hours of 10am and 2pm.  This will allow everyone to enjoy the day and no one will be working the entire time.  If you are contacted to participate, remember that the time will go quickly and be easy if everyone takes a small bite of the big event.  Please feel free to contact Mrs. Crow at marycrow@qwest.net if you would like to get your name in now.
